HIV is still one of the most deadly viruses in the world. The therapy can suppress the virus, but the disease still can not be cured. The research team of Prof. dr. Dr. Linos Vandekerckhove, associated with UZGent and UGent, conducts pioneering research into the cure of HIV.
"With 9 out of 10 HIV positive that take HIV inhibitors every day, we can completely suppress the virus, but the virus remains latent in the body and reappears when the medication is no longer taken, so we focus all of our Attention in the research now on the functional healing of HIV ", says Prof. Dr. Linos Vandekerckhove, coordinator of the HIV clinic at UZ Gent and head of one of the HIV research labs at Ghent University. The Ghent researchers now want to switch off the HIV virus in the first instance in order to achieve a functional cure. This means that they are looking for ways to stop HIV medication with HIV-positive, without the virus returning. Recent research developments suggest that this should be feasible.
